The Car

First registered in Italy on 25 November 1953, our Series III Aurelia was imported into the United Kingdom in January. All the owners are recorded in the original UK Registration Book that is with the car.

From 2015 to 2017, the car underwent a comprehensive restoration by Thornley Kelham, with more than £200,000 of work undertaken to return it to the stunning original finish it bears today.

One of the last Series III Aurelia’s produced in 1953, the car retains its original de Virgilio designed 2.5-litre V6 engine and has since been returned to its period Amaranto colour, paired with a traditional Lancia grey cloth interior. Genuine chrome hubcaps complete the cream-coloured wheels, matched by the original cream steering wheel and instrument details of the interior.

For connoisseurs of early post-war GT cars, the Lancia Aurelia undoubtedly ranks alongside the more heralded brands of the period, such as Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz.

Our thoughts

The Lancia Aurelia was positioned at the top end of the post-war car market and was the daily driver of choice for many of the era’s top racing drivers, such as Ascari, Fangio and Hawthorn, a testament both to its quality and performance.

This example is truly exceptional, restored to the highest standards over a two year period by Thornley Kelham, with no expense spared to ensure the most authentic and beautiful finish. It would be fair to say that it would be hard to find a better prepared example.

To drive, the Aurelia feels a league ahead of the more agricultural options from Aston Martin and Jaguar, or even the more prosaic Porsche 356 (much as we love it). She drifts around the curves of our Bicester Heritage test track with true aplomb, offering fast, refined performance alongside great civility.

These cars are not widely appreciated but that is perhaps part of the appeal.  We would be thrilled to have one in the Sports Purpose garage.
