model history
The Porsche 3.2 Carrera represents the final evolution of the original impact-bumper 911 before the 964 generation arrived in 1989.
Combining classic 911 styling with the most refined iteration of the air-cooled flat-six engine, the 3.2 Carrera is widely regarded as the perfect bridge between the analogue 1970s models and the more modern 911s that followed.
The 3.2 Carrera replaced the 911 SC and brought with it a host of technical improvements. Mainly, the use of a larger 3.2 litre engine that produced 231bhp and 284Nm, an improvement over the 3.0 litre SC engine which made 204bhp and 267Nm.
Later 3.2 Carrera models such as this one benefitted from the fitment of the G50 gearbox which had a smoother shift than the 915 as well as a hydraulic clutch making operation less tiring.
In typical Porsche fashion, the 3.2 Carrera balanced performance with everyday usability. Power-assisted brakes, optional air-conditioning, and the availability of both coupe and Targa body styles made it a genuine all-rounder.
this car
This car was delivered new by Charles Follett Ltd in November 1986 finished in Guards Red with Black interior. The original service books show the car was serviced regularly with the mileage rising to 44,300 by 2003 at which point the current owner acquired the car.
Since then he has used it sparingly and the car has now covered just 53,150 miles. In 2021 Tuthill Porsche carried out a major service of the car which totalled £10,000. The car has since had a further service in Septmeber 2025 and is booked in for a gearbox rebuild which will be carried out pre-delivery.
The car has clearly been cherished throughout its life, with a full history file, all the original service manuals and books, original toolkit, careful maintenance and recent expenditure on mechanical recommissioning. The car has had five previous owners though we believe three of those were from one family.
The Guards Red paintwork is in very good condition and remains one of the most timeless colour combinations for a 1980s 911. The interior presents beautifully, with its original black leather seats with white piping showing little patina and all the correct factory switchgear and instrumentation in place.
It would be fair to say that this is the most original 3.2 that we have seen for a long time.
