model history

The Porsche 3.2 Carrera represents the final evolution of the original impact-bumper 911 before the 964 generation arrived in 1989.

Combining classic 911 styling with the most refined iteration of the air-cooled flat-six engine, the 3.2 Carrera is widely regarded as the perfect bridge between the analogue 1970s models and the more modern 911s that followed.

The 3.2 Carrera replaced the 911 SC and brought with it a host of technical improvements. Mainly, the use of a larger 3.2 litre engine that produced 231bhp and 284Nm, an improvement over the 3.0 litre SC engine which made 204bhp and 267Nm.

Later 3.2 Carrera models such as this one benefitted from the fitment of the G50 gearbox which had a smoother shift than the 915 as well as a hydraulic clutch making operation less tiring.

In typical Porsche fashion, the 3.2 Carrera balanced performance with everyday usability. Power-assisted brakes, optional air-conditioning, and the availability of both coupe and Targa body styles made it a genuine all-rounder.

this car

This car was delivered new by Maltin Porsche in February 1989 finished in Black with Black interior, one of the very last G-Series 911s delivered before the new 964 model. The original service books show the car has been serviced regularly since then with the mileage rising to 73,061 today.

The large history file contains invoices going back to 1992 and Porsche Wolverhampton have serviced the car regularly since the current owner purchased it in 2017. Interestingly the car was specified with a short shifter, a rare factory option. The engine had a top end rebuild in 2010 at 48,000 miles, covering only 25,000 since. The whale tail has been removed in place of a standard engine lid.

The car has clearly been cherished throughout its life, with a full history file, all the original service manuals and stamped books, original toolkit.

The black paintwork is in very good condition as is the leather interior which makes for a pretty cool all black colour combination. The sports seats show very little patina and all the correct factory switchgear and instrumentation in place.

With its crisp throttle response, low down grunt and smooth G50 gearbox, the 3.2 Carrera is a joy to drive.
Our thoughts

With its crisp throttle response, low down grunt and smooth G50 gearbox, the 3.2 Carrera is a joy to drive. It fills a sweet spot of early 911s being the last of the original, air-cooled, torsion-bar cars before the 964 introduced ABS, power steering and a new suspension design.

In much the same way as the later 993 model, the late G-Series models, complete with the later gearbox, is really the ultimate ‘cooking version’ of the air-cooled 911. There is an unsurprising integrity to the car, and this one is better than most.

We have long been advocates of the spoilerless 3.2, much more common in Europe than the UK, and this lovely, black beauty radiates late 80s cool. It is also rather nice to drive – something of a keeper, as eight years with the current owner shows.
